CREEPY CLASSICS presents...

MOVIE NIGHTS

Every weekend we're watching movies together...whether you're in Pennsylvania USA, or Sydney Australia. It's a throwback! Back to the days when you had the anticipation for waiting till the weekend to see the classic horror or science fiction film that was listed in the TV Guide. The plan is to watch a movie at 7:30PM on Saturday night in your own time zone. Or, if you can't Saturday night...anytime during the weekend. Then, we'll all get together and e-mail our thoughts on the film...a few paragraphs...or simply a sentence if you'd like. They after-viewing reviews appear on our Creepy Classics/Monster Bash News Page. See the latest thoughts posted by viewers ther now.

SATURDAY'S MOVIE: "CARNIVAL OF SOULS" (1962) After a terrible car accident a woman sets out for a new life as a church organist. She is haunted by zombie-like spectres and her organ playing sounds possessed. Low budget and truly creepy. Also known as CORRIDORS OF EVIL. Movie suggested by John Clemons, Union City, CA.

CARNIVAL OF SOULS is a little movie in its own time and own little creepy world. A woman is in a horrible car accient when riding with some wild teenage friends. The car careens over a bridge to a watery grave. The young woman (Candice Hilligoss) is seen stumbling in the river mud, in shock. She appears as the only survivor. Trying to re-group her life, she arrives at a small town in answer to an add for a church organist. She appears to be in a weird trance, never focused. The townspeople are odd and she encounters a haunting at a closed amusement park. A corpse-like man then keeps appearing to her....dreams or not?

A film that rises well above its low budget origin thanks to some seasoned industrial film makers trying their hand at a horror movie.

An interesting note that I learned from the documentaries on the Criterion version of the DVD. The carnival/amusement park nightmare scene was shot at an actual amusement park when it was closed. Today that amusement park still exists...but it's rusty remains are underwater as some geological change flooded the area where it was, and it has remained underwater for decades now. A bizarre and creepy footnote itself!

"Carnival of Souls" is one of the creepiest movies ever made. From the outset you just know something is not right with Mary.
The slightly dead performance of Candace Hilligross and the over the top acting of Sidney Berger only serve to heighten the
eerieness of the movie.

The film's low budget greatly enhances the dark mood of the film.
I've seen "Carnival of Souls" quite a few times but the dance of the dead scene never fails to send a chill up my spine.
"Carnival of Souls" is one of the most frightening films made in the 1960's. It should be required viewing for every horror fan.
